The EPC was established on August 19, 1992 through Legal Notice No. 4342, with the mandate of developing and promoting Kenya’s exports. In pursuit of its mandate, the EPC primary objective is to address bottlenecks facing exporters and producers of export goods and services in order to increase the performance level of the export sector. It also provides a forum for dialogue between the exporting fraternity and relevant public and private sector institutions and organizations through Sectoral Panels. EPC’s activities are organized under five main pillars as follows:
In addition to the above pillars, EPC is also a liaison office for the African Trade Insurance Agency (ATI), a Pan African institution supported by the World Bank and the European Union that offers trade political risk insurance, credit insurance cover, FDI insurance, among other services.
Trade Information & Delivery Services
EPC collects, stores, analyses and disseminates trade information to support the business community through the Centre for Business Information in Kenya (CBIK). CBlK has current and professionally generated information on existing and potential export markets from credible sources such as the International Trade Centre (ITC), World Trade Organization (WTO), trade promotion organizations such as the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), Centre for the Promotion of Imports from Developing Countries (CBI), among others. Information is accessible through print and electronic media. The Centre has a library (Reference Centre), which is accessible to the business community and also offers free Business Counseling Services to clients
Export Markets and Product Development
Guided by the new structured approach to export market prioritization, the Council undertakes to identify export market opportunities for Kenyan products and formulate appropriate market entry and penetration strategies. This involves conducting regular Market Research, Surveys, organizing trade missions, contact promotion programmes, buyer/ seller meetings, trade fairs and exhibitions and inward buying missions.
The Council through a structured approach has this year developed the National Export Market Development Programme (NEMDP) to guide its export market development activities. The NEMDP is a reflection of joint efforts, both public and private sectors, in consolidating and enlarging our traditional export markets of East African Community (EAC), Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and European Union (EU) and diversifying into new and emerging export market of Eastern Europe, North America, Asia and Rest of Africa.
The programme has been developed through extensive consultations with stakeholders both in public and private sector using a scientific approach which guided the selection and prioritization of markets and has classified the markets into four Tiers. The objective of such extensive consultations is to minimize duplication of efforts and to ensure focused export market development activities.
The Council facilitates the expansion and diversification of Kenya's export product range through interventions in branding, product design, styling, and packaging for value addition at both sectoral and firm levels. It also encourages the formation of trade associations to enable various sectors to regulate themselves and respond to the dynamics of international markets.
