Hot Springs, AR (SportsNetwork. Curtis Martin Youth Jersey .com) - Eclipse Award winner Take Charge Brandi fought off a challenge down the stretch to capture Saturdays $100,000 Martha Washington Stakes in her season debut at Oaklawn Park. Owned by Willis Horton and trained by D. Wayne Lukas, Take Charge Brandi went off as the 2-5 favorite in the six-horse field of 3-year-old fillies. Ridden for the first time by veteran jockey Jon Court, Take Charge Brandi set the pace in the mile event. Basically, I was told just be a passenger and shed do the rest, Court noted. On the final turn, Take Charge Brandi had the lead with Sarah Sis and 7-2 second choice Indian Annie right behind. The favorite was joined down the stretch by 7-1 third pick Sarah Sis but was able to hold off the challenger to post a head victory. This was a comeback race and were obviously glad to have it under our belts. She was a little erratic through the stretch, Lukas said, but it was her first time here. It gives us something to build on. The big thing is getting this under her belt and moving on to the next one. Indian Annie got third followed by Sweet Corinna, High Dollar Woman and Perfect Fit. Cape Town Stevie was an early scratch. The time for the Martha Washington on a fast track was 1:39.66. Take Charge Brandi boosted her earnings by $60,000 to $1,680,126 with five wins in nine starts. The Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies winner is being pointed toward the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs on Friday, May 1. Well, you may get to see it in the Arkansas Derby, but lets take it one race at a time, said Horton. Our big goal is the Kentucky Oaks. If things work out, we may run in the Arkansas Derby and possibly the Kentucky Derby with her because Wayne is good with fillies and hes won the Derby with fillies before. Take Charge Brandi won the 2014 Eclipse Award as champion 2-year-old filly primarily based on her 61-1 upset victory in the Juvenile Fillies last November. The 3-year-old finished her 2014 season by winning the Starlet Stakes at Los Alamitos on Dec. 13. That victory came just three weeks after capturing the Delta Downs Princess Stakes on Nov. 22. Take Charge Brandi paid $2.80, $2.40 and $2.10. Sarah Sis returned $4.20 and $2.60, and Indian Annie paid $2.20 to show. Robby Anderson Jersey . Scott joins popular NASCAR champion Bill Elliott, two-time series champ Joe Weatherly, 1960 champion Rex White and 26-time race winner Fred Lorenzen. Scott competed in NASCARs top series from 1961-73. He won his only race at Speedway Park in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1963, taking the checkered flag in the 100-mile feature after starting 15th. He was the second-leading vote getter behind Elliott from a 54-member panel, including current Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson. Scott, who died in 1990, was the first African-American driver to race fulltime in NASCARs top series. He had won more than 100 races at local tracks before stepping up to race against NASCARs best. Among Scotts legacy to the sport is the sports Drive for Diversity initiative, one of the top youth development programs for multicultural and female drivers across the motorsports industry thats been in place since 2004. "The next inductee gives me additional pride," NASCAR chairman Brian France said in introducing Scott, "Because he undoubted scaled and climbed the highest mountain." Scotts story was loosely portrayed in the 1977 movie, "Greased Lightning," where Richard Pryor starred as Scott, the one-time taxi driver from Danville, Virginia. "He said one day they are going to write a book about me," Franklin Scott said of his father. "He had great determination. He was a great ambassador for the sport." Elliott said he was a bit surprised when he was called first and thanked those who helped him achieve what he had in racing. "You look at all of the people to be nominated and you try to put things into perspective. And bam, you are the first name announced and its like, holy mackerel what just happened," he said. Modified champion Jerry Cook was sixth, car owner Robert Yates seventh and the late driver and announcer Benny Parsons eighth. The five inductees will be enshrined at ceremonies on January 30th. Hall of Famer Richard Petty, among the voters, said there were few clear cut people on the list of 20. "I had my thoughts and others had theirs, but nobody said this is the guy that needs to get in," Petty said. "That was different than past years." Weatherly, who died in 1964, won 25 races in NASCARs premiere series including those back-to-back championships in 1962 and 1963. White raced from 1956-64, winning 28 times in 233 events including six races during his championship season in 1960. Lorenzen started as a mechanic in NASCAR in 1960, but became a driver by the end of the year. He won the first three of his 26 races the next season.
