Overview

  • In the last few days, EA Sports has started an online campaign called #StayAndPlay. The idea that it will help keep folks occupied during the current outbreak of Covid-19. One of the ways they have chosen to spread awareness is to put together an Madden event featuring a number of currently active NFL players who are superstars.

I've played football video games since you can recall. One among the very first titles that I remember playing with my original Nintendo was the 10-Yard Fight. Since then, my love affair with football and the sport video games developed. Some decades later, I still remember my uncle playing Bill Walsh College Football on his Sega Genesis. Also, there was Joe Montana II: Sports Talk Football and obviously the start of the Madden franchise. In between these "realistic" games of football sunk Mutant League Football. Even to this day, Mutant League Football remains one of my top games ever. It was an integral part of my youth, and, to be truthful, it hit me different ways.

I didn't awake yesterday and thought I'd see an email on my phone telling me that Madden as well as the NFL have reached an agreement to create NFL games. I was almost thinking that it was just a prank. But then I realized it would be a non-simulation-based game and my excitement was dampened slightly. However, as I think about the game today I am becoming more and more enthusiastic. I think Madden will come up with a method to make the game as realistic as is possible and still be technically within the guidelines of making an entirely non-sim gaming experience. So, what exactly is "non-sim" is it? It's vague.

Is Madden even sim? It's a good attempt (and I'm certain it's based on whatever deal EA comes to with NFL). But how far will Madden take it? Are we talking NFL Street? Blitz? It's not even 11-on-11? Perhaps a game that is somewhat real on the game play front, but also includes balls trails, speeds boosters, big celebrations. I'll accept whatever I can find from the beginning, as I believe this is the first step by Madden to offer it clear to NFL an offer that it cannot make to offer us a variety of simulation games.

I'm assuming that it is likely that the Madden team has waited for years to seize this chance and I am expecting they will play through all the stops. They have all the game's history from which to draw inspiration for the things to play (NFL Blitz, NFL Street, Backbreaker) and what to avoid doing (NFL Tour and the Blitz reboot's dependence on the internet for multiplayer and or even NHL 3-on-3 arcade). It is certain that for both players and for business reasons alike, they'll launch with a top-quality football game that will also serve to illustrate how different it's going to be unlike Madden.

They must be a stand-out, considering their standing and the chance I am not sure they'll leave any of their options open. I am expecting that it will be a fantastic assortment of anti-Madden features that will have an incredibly smooth performance on the field. Anything less is an absolute disappointment for everyone involved. I don't see players fumbling with the ball in this game. I am excited to see what Madden produces and can't not wait to hear more.

I'm not expecting much but I'm pretty optimistic. I'm hoping I'm right, and I'm sure you'll agree with me when I say that I adore the best arcade football titles. However, realistically, what will we get from this? It's not a brand new Blitz-style sport, since we don't celebrate or make fun of concussions. If they create a brand fresh NFL Street, sure, it's great. It's not terrible. I'm just wondering, what is it that Madden done in the past year that makes you believe that a new football player is any great?

Why do we think Madden isn't Buy Madden 24 Coins? Even if it does, why shouldn't EA Sports use their punishing richness, which is suffocating, to keep their the exclusivity when it returns in 2023? The world doesn't need another game of football in backyards even as exciting as it would be to watch. In the moment, I'm somewhat negative on this. Let's see if I can enjoy this later and Madden 2423 is the most amazing football simulation ever created.
