Here are a few guesses at why people have taken this stance.
1. To make the point that a -ing sentence of the form "This coffee tastes like THIS" (note the "this" that got removed from the middle of the sentence) is not a grammatical construct.
Now, many people reading this would either dismiss the answer based on this argument, or they would get the wrong answer and write something like "I'm not sure I'd really give it that much of a shot."
